From the day he entered the hallowed halls of Alemany in the ninth grade, John was anticipating graduation day so that he could get on with his life! Jim Davis, George Mathias, Pat Kellerman, Alan McDonald and Dick McDonald kept John out of trouble; although John says “Trouble? What trouble?” Married to Lori Ryan and now residing in Arizona, John has four children (Mike – 35, Matt - 33, Kevin – 11 and Chris - 8) and a grandson (Dillon – 8). He spent 4 years in the Navy as a radar operator and spent one year of duty in Viet Nam. His civilian tour of duty started with the telephone company in the Valley. Thirty years later, he retired as a Senior Engineer from Lucent Technologies. He enjoys ocean sailing (in Arizona??), is involved with coaching kids’ sports and is president of the school PTA.

John writes: I retired in 1998 after 30 years with a major communication company. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. My wife Lori and I have two boys, ages 7 and 10. I also have two grown boys, ages 32 and 34. Life is great! I spend my time sailing out of San Diego and in the Caribbean. Also, coaching kids sports and trying to stay healthy by working out. We also enjoy camping and exploring the national parks during the summer. Winter is skiing which we can all do together now. I am looking forward to seeing old friends at the reunion.

Marilyn remembers the finer events of high school, such as Willie Waters’ station wagon, cheating in algebra, feeding books to Eeyore (our friendly next door hungry neighbor), hanging out with good friends, Pat Smith, walking “up the hill” (to get to the campus), “Susie” Finnegan’s slumber parties, working at Papa Jack’s bakery (Susie Finnegan’s cousin’s bakery), school plays, sock hops in the gym and on and on, etc. Having been in advertising for 20 years and then switching to and still working in real estate appraising (for 13 years), Marilyn is living a full life with her partner and two stepkids! Corlette, whose main means of support after graduation from high school were modeling and cosmetology, is still modeling for the Nevada County and surrounding community activities. And why not? She’s beautiful – inside and out. As for Alemany, she remembers avoiding boys she didn’t want to dance with at the sock hops; pajama parties where the most fun was putting someone’s bra in the freezer overnight; finally getting to mingle with the “boys” at lunchtime; ping pong tournaments (she came in second), football games, “Kismet” and disliking the whole “slave thing” for Latin class. She now spends her time “retired” with Pete and taking part in kayaking on their lake, being leader of the Welcome Wagon Hiking Group, acting for the Lake Wildwood Little Theatre, snow skiing, gardening and the great love of both of them – golfing! And this is all after raising Sean – 39, Matthew – 35, Christopher – 29 and Eric – 27, who collectively have produced grandchildren Christian – 13, Timothy – 10, Sarah – 8, Marian – 5, Thomas – 3 and Joseph – 1.

After 32 years of service, Lisa retired from Lockheed in 2000 and since then has taken up quilting, first as a hobby but which has now taken over her life! She has become a quilt-a-holic by volunteering for Project Linus and making one or two quilts a month for them. If you’re confused by the last name, I meant to do that! Just seeing if you’re paying attention. Kidding aside, “Dixon” is Denyse’s biological father’s name and he passed away when Denyse was very little. Her step- father’s name was Petty – thus Denyse Petty. Denyse remembers sitting in the library and looking down into the boys’ study hall; screaming “Mouse” and scaring the poor little old lady in study hall; alarm clocks in the lockers; hanging out with Sue Finnegan, Marilyn Bidwell, Margge Holcomb and Bernadette Peltier. She also remembers it as a time that was carefree and stress free. Now helping to run the family business, Airzone Recreation, Inc. (see the ad), Denyse was at one time a teacher in Quebec; thereafter moved to a log cabin that they built near Ottawa; then she was a resort manager of a 500 acre lake front property; then on to administration in the medical field in B.C.; and finally, she became a sales representative in the educational field. She says one thing she knows for sure, we never stop learning.

Jonesie, as she is fondly remembered, recollects that during her Junior year, she drove her new ’57 Chevy on the “new” freeway at 100 mph - just her, the car and the freeway. So glad she was able to make it to the 40th reunion in one piece! Her cohorts in crime were Molly, Sandy, Paula, Mary, Judy, Peggy, Jane, Laura, Chris, Sherri, Jeri, Tom, Dick, Harry, etc. Aside from raising her children - Elizabeth (37) and Michael (34) - the past 40 years have been spent on discovery. She fell in love with history and stories of political figures in powerful positions and spent hours sipping coffee with foreign students. Her big regret was turning down an opportunity to live in the dorms because of the imposed curfew – so instead she spent hours on the freeways driving back and forth to UCLA. After transferring to CSUN and by the start of her 3rd college year, she was married with a baby and left school. She returned to CSUN in 1979, worked at the VA and in 1981 earned her doctorate. Her internship was spent in Boston and in Los Angeles. She became head of Behavioral Medicine at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center before moving to Northern California to take a position as senior neuropsychologist and clinical director at a hospital in Chico. She now consults, after 10 years at Chico, in the field of Behavioral Medicine, focusing on pain management and occupational medicine. So, what does she do with the rest of her time???

Stephanie (32) has given Pat his granddaughter, Jinessa Ann (6). After trying college for awhile, Pat joined the Air Force, did basic training and technical training in Texas, went on to his first duty at Travis AFB in Northern California for two years and then “the poor dear” had to go to Hickam AFB in Hawaii for the remaining two years. However, he also did temporary duty in the Philippines, Japan and Guam and saw a little of the action in Viet Nam. Upon his return to civilian life, he returned to college where he earned his AA degree and from that experience has spent his career in the lumber industry and is now a territory manager for Georgia Pacific. He and Marie have a cherry orchard that they open up to the public for picking the second week of June – any cherry pickers out there?? Pat’s memories of high school include the football games (especially the cheerleaders), the swat stick, Fr. Kernan keeping everyone focused on Religion and Father Weber. His friends were Dan Galasso, Ralph Hynch and Bob Guzman and he fondly remembers fishing trips on the Malibu barge – a “barge” in Malibu?? Denyse is right – you never stop learning.

Mary’s memories of high school include hanging out with a bunch of different groups of people, exciting basketball games in the gym and riding routers buses to the away games. Mary has no children, but boasts of her three cats, Hyper, Sweetness and Twinkle. Having been a math teacher, auditor, operations controller, consulting manager and presently manager of family partnerships and related tax work, Mary has lived in San Diego, Davis, Austin, Chicago, Portage and New Jersey, where she resided when the tragedy of 9-11 occurred. Although her husband was not hurt in the attack, he was trapped in New York City for awhile because his office building was located near the U.N. Headquarters in Murray Hill. Mary’s certifications include a teaching credential and a CPA.

John and Pauline write: Pauline and I were married in 1965. We have four children and nine grandchildren. I joined the LAPD in 1971 and retired in 1991. We moved to the Sierra foothills (Mariposa County) in 1991 when I took a job with the Tuolumne County District Attorney as a D/A Investigator. I retired again (final retirement) in 2002. Pauline is presently a retired bookkeeper. We're currently building a home in Bear Valley Springs, a subdivision in the mountains west of Tehachapi, CA , on the seventh fairway of a very nice golf course. We hope to move in this summer. I plan to play as much golf as possible.
Pauline and I share most of our fond memories. We spent a good deal of time together at school and seldom missed a social function. I recall the time we left a dance to take a walk in the dark behind the gym. It was dark and cold and windy, and just as I was about to warm up Pauline a stern sounding female voice (a nuns voice) called from the dark, " Mr. Molidor, please take Miss Chartrain back to the gym.". We never figured out who was lurking in the dark. We both have many many wonderful memories of or time at Alemany. Too many for this space, but enough to fill a book.

Doug, still single but still looking, who worked for the County of Los Angeles for 20 years then was out of service for 13 years, then decided to return to County service as a gain services social worker for the Department of Public Social Services, says this is the best job and pay he’s ever had. Doug continues to re-enact the American Civil War, the Indian wars and perform in cowboy gunfight shows and he possesses an award-winning hysterical, er, “historical” display. In addition to all this, Doug has done some motion picture and television work and at present is involved as a student of the healing arts through metaphysical application. And as if that’s not enough, he is pursuing his interest in quantum physics of past/future life research through the use of hypnosis. I am getting very sleepy, very sleepy . . .zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

He taught students whose parents were diplomats, members of the international business community, UN workers, local rich luminaries, Russian mafia members, members of NGO’s, members of the military stationed at embassies, etc. Most of his students went on to top universities in the UK, the USA, Canada, Poland, France, Japan, Russia, Germany and Switzerland. His subjects were English, drama, philosophy, journalism, creative writing and social studies. Due to cutbacks and health issues, Mike volunteered to leave his position in Estonia and return to the United States where he was going to seek a teaching position, possibly on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico. In the last 14 years, Gino has become the father of a son, Gregorio (14) and three daughters, Caitlin (11), Heather (7) and Marguerite (5) and they have been instrumental in settling Gino into a comfortable, if seemingly mundane, life in suburbia (i.e., soccer, dance lessons, lacrosse, etc.). Married to Dierdre, a marketing director at Nabisco since 1986, Gino spent his years after Alemany at San Fernando Valley State, then in the Army (7 years) beating around the bushes of Southeast Asia and South America as a Special Forces commander (he says that being brown and short had its advantages and no serious damages occurred outside of having the hell scared out of him), then retiring from the Army and going back to school where he received an MBA from Harvard in 1974 and then going to New York to work in marketing for Colgate, Nabisco and American Home. Ten years ago, he switched to the Hispanic market even though his Spanish was terrible. He is currently director of strategic planning for the Vidal Partnership, a young group of advertising types where he enjoys being the “old man” at the company! His Spanish has improved immensely, but he still can’t dance – don’t ask him!!

A former politician (elected to public office in 1988 and served the community for 5 years) and real estate broker, Judy was active in the Board of Realtors, organized fund raising events for homeless shelters, the neighborhood watch, etc. Together with hubby, Chris, the Dunns moved to Channel Islands Beach where her kids spent their teen years surfing and boating. When the birds left the nest, Judy and Chris traveled the States in their motorhome, moved to Bellingham, WA. for 5 years and then in 1998 moved to Vegas where Chris is a senior engineer at the Venetian Hotel. Judy’s spare time is spent with the grandkids and traveling to Hawaii (they made their 9th trip there last May).

On her days off, she works for the head of the Emt. Department and is on the EMS Committee for the California State Firefighters Association. He spent 3 years in Europe and ran companies in Taiwan and Korea. He is presently a tenure professor at a community college and has a consulting practice. Wife, Nina, is a speech therapist whom he met on a ski lift. Their kids keep them pretty busy – Christopher (23), Whitney (16) and Mitchell (14).

Danita remembers Dancer running up the hall before Sister Augustine warning those of us who didn’t study that she was on her way and to duck out of sight! She also remembers rolling up our skirts after the kneel-down spot checks and putting on makeup on the bus after school. Days were carefree, she says, and her only worries were being called on in Latin class or having to turn in assignments she hadn’t done. Friend to Sylvia Shely and Pat Finley in high school, Danita, a former psych major at UCLA, evolved into an author (Trial of God which can be seen on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com by DKChristie) and she produced and starred in “Body Song” – a videotape of mind and body exercise. She spent 6 months in Mexico working on the movie “Titanic” and has held seminars called “Gods and Lovers” which deals with religion and sexuality. I was one of the bus people from Palmdale. I will always remember the thousands of miles of bus rides and the great people who traveled with me. I'll never forget Sr. Augustine and the latin ""torture chamber"". There were great dances and several musical productions that I was fortunate to be a part of. It was a great four years!" Impressively still together after all these years, the Tieso’s are now both retired – Jan from the correspondence school she worked at when her boys were little, and Gary after 32 years in Law Enforcement. They left Carpinteria after 32 years and moved to Vandenberg Village, just north of Lompoc and south of Vandenberg Air Force Base, into a nice home with a view of a golf course! Only a one-year student of Alemany and one of the Senior Six singers, Jeanne remembers the co-institutional theory: you could speak to the boys, but not stand beside them!! Except at lunchtime, which seems to be the favorite memory from high school among our classmates! Jeanne also remembers kneeling during skirt check every morning with the appropriate personnel looking on to overlook the process; the avoidance of occasional sin which she now believes is undermined by fashion alone; and she remembers Alemany being a raft in the middle of a stormy sea and – all kidding aside – is grateful for that journey and the people who made her feel welcome. Father Wagner has spent the past 40 years being a priest and says there’s not too many of them left! After 8 years at Alemany, where he hung out with us all, he becam principal of Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland for 6 years. He then pastured several different parishes until landing at Most Precious Blood Church for the past 10 years. He sends his regards to everyone and thanks us for the memories.

Father Kernan (see
picture), a member of
the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, has 3 sisters in Ireland who have given him lots
of nieces and nephews. His memories include being one of the few teachers who
enjoyed teaching Latin (I wonder if he remembers Sister Augustine and her dog
Spot
Dancer?). He remembers not being happy about being sent to Alemany, but after a
year, we won him over and he remembers us as being young people of faith and
with good common sense and Christian values. At Alemany until 1969, Father
Kernan then entered parish ministry in Pacoima and Brawly,California,
Billings, Montana, Oakland, California and Baja, California. He recently spent
one year in Ireland with his sisters and their families. Although he doesn’t
remember names too well, he does remember our faces and he says he is happy to
be in touch with us again.

Sister Constance, this writer’s favorite teacher and the one who encouraged me to learn English grammar by treating me and the other girls as adults by addressing us as “Women,” came to our reunion again this time and it was great seeing her. Sister Constance, we’re planning another one in 5 years! See you then.
